Rarest-dated-flintlock

$4,500.00

This English flintlock rifle features a rare, dated barrel inscribed “1730,” indicating early 18th-century manufacture at a transitional period between late dog-lock influences and fully developed flint mechanisms. The lock is flat-faced with a pointed tail and is crisply marked RAWLES, a known English maker, with strong engraving remaining. Internal lock components are well-finished and correct for the period, showing minimal wear.

The octagonal barrel retains sharp edges and is fitted with clear English proof marks and maker’s marks at the breech, all deeply struck and legible. The presence of both proof and private maker’s marks supports commercial London or Birmingham production rather than provincial assembly. The rifle configuration itself is uncommon for English arms of this date, suggesting either early sporting use or export influence.

The stock is well-shaped with period-correct architecture, fine molding lines, and iron furniture consistent with early 18th-century English work. Overall condition is extra fine, with exceptional surface preservation, strong markings, and no notable losses or modern alterations, making this a scarce and highly desirable early English flintlock rifle.
