SOLD Scottish Basket Hilt Sword/ Fencible Men 1798

A fine Basket Hilt sword for the 4th Broadbane Regiment of Fencible Men. The Plan of raising a fencible corp in the Highlands was first proposed by William Pitt and Elder in 1759 to combat the threat of invasion. The Broadbane Fencibles were raised when John Campbell, Earl of Breadbane offered to raise two fencible regiments in 1793. This sword is engraved at the front of the basket with the Campbell coat of arms (the inscription is difficult to see due to use of the sword over the years). the sword is double edged broadsword with a pierced hilt with thistles. 41 inches overall; 36inch blade.
